Responding to Sexual Assault
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)
The mission of the Illinois Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (IL SANE) Program is to increase the number of SANEs working in Illinois by providing high quality, consistent education and support for registered nurses and other professionals serving sexual assault survivors. By educating nurses, police, prosecutors, advocates, and others, survivors of sexual assault will be assured of receiving quality patient care; full, fair, and accurate forensic evaluations; and a multidisciplinary approach that holds offenders accountable for these horrific crimes.
The Illinois SANE program was developed by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, with assistance from the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault and existing SANE programs, through a grant received from the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority.
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners are crucial in ensuring that sexual assault patients receive more compassionate care. Specially-trained nurses are able to reduce re-traumatization of patients and improve the quality of forensic evidence collection, which in turn increases prosecution rates of offenders.
SANE Trainings
To carry out its mission, the Illinois SANE Program offers several trainings. All trainings are free of charge to attendees and are offered in locations across the state. Trainings often have pre-requisites and other training requirements.
Scheduled trainings will be posted with an INVITATION that includes the date, course objectives and requirements. The APPLICATION to attend the training will be available to complete online. To maximize the number of agencies represented at the training, the Attorney General’s office may limit the number of attendees that each agency may send.
