History of the Office of the Attorney General
The Office of Attorney General first came into existence at the admission of the State of Illinois to the Union on December 3, 1818. Adapted constitutionally and legislatively over the years to meet the needs of a growing State, the office has increased in size and importance and its powers have been greatly expanded since the early days of Illinois State government.
